Doug applied his professional engineers skills to help address the legitimate concerns of members of the neighborhood over the proposed Berkeley Carroll School Expansion during his 2009 City Council Campaign. Here's a letter Doug sent to the neighborhood organizers and the administration of the Berkeley Carroll School in response the Wednesday, July 29th meeting that he and over 75 residents attended:
Doug currently lives and works in Brooklyn Heights. He is now a happily married father of three, an active P.S. 8 parent and a girl scout dad. Doug understands the importance of parent involvement in a child's life both at the home and in the class room. The faculty at P.S. 8 have done a wonderful job in doing this with publishing parties, special events and enrichment programs. When the kids aren't at school, Doug loves nothing more than taking them ice skating at Prospect Park's wonderful outdoor Wollman Rink, to one our treasured museums, our great neighborhood playgrounds or swimming at the beach.
Here's Doug's closing letter from the 2009 Democratic Primary for City Council in Brooklyn's 33rd District:
To all my supporters, my staff, friends and family:
I thank you. I thank you for believing in our campaign for reform and the possibility of politics. I thank you for your generous contributions of time and money, for volunteering, for spreading the word, and for being receptive to the end in a relentless storm of campaigning by seven candidates in the 33rd City Council District alone. For all of your extraordinary support I feel incredibly honored to have run and I am as optimistic as ever that we will see change we can believe in.
In wake of Fall 2007 hate crimes in Brooklyn Heights and Columbia University, submitted to NYC comprehensive proposal for city-level umbrella/outreach office on peace and non-violence called PeaceNYC (Click here to read both proposals). He has participated in The Dialogue Project and is a Member of Marty Markowitz's Teen Violence Task Force. With teen violence on the rise and the recent hate crimes in Carroll Gardens near Luquer Street and Hamilton Avenue, Doug's understanding of the problem is vital for a representative and safer neighborhoods.
During Doug's hotly contested City Council race last September, Rep. Dennis Kucinich declared, "We need Doug Bivianos in City Councils all across the Country!" on the steps of his campaign office on Montague St in Brooklyn Heights (as reported by BrooklynHeightsBlog.com, photo by Marc Hermann).
